“Shit.”

It took Herculean effort to pry myself from the warm body curled against me and slide out of the bed without waking Dani.

Last night was unexpected.

Last night was everything.

Half-shutting the door behind me, I jogged over to where my work phone chimed on the kitchen counter. It was always on because I was always on duty.

I steeled myself, seeing the name on the screen as I answered, “Masano.”

“Stark, we need you down at the station. We’ve got a fucking murder case four fucking days before Daytona.” If his irritation wasn’t evident in his expletives, it rang in his tone.

“Jesus.” I glanced at the bedroom door, hating that I was going to have to leave Dani so soon. “We know who the victim is?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. With the department resources tapped handling the influx of visitors and increase in crimes related to the race, I knew Masano was going to shove this in my lap. Which meant I was going to be searching for two killers.

I yanked the phone away from my ear as he yelled at one of the officers, waiting until his ranting died before I slowly brought the speaker back to my ear as he said, “Some crew member on one of the teams. Just get here now.”

“Wait, what?” Dread dropped like ice cubes into my blood. Hard and frozen full of fear. Not fear of a killer. Fear because I knew what this murder had to do with before I even asked. “What’s the name?”

“I don’t remember, Stark. Christ. Some young guy from the Valenti team. Owner called it in this morning.”

The ice made its way to cold shackles around my heart. “Was the name Chris?”

“Fuck, Stark. Maybe. Sure, that sounds fucking familiar, but I’m not certain. You know I wasn’t on scene. Maybe you should just get your ass in here and see for yourself instead of gallivanting around town doing everything but your damn job this last week.”

My fist tightened at my side. One of these days I was going to level Captain Masano and the whole damn precinct was going to erupt in cheers.

“I’ll be there in ten.” The last I heard was him yelling—at me or some other unfortunate soul, I couldn’t be sure—as I ended the call.

Setting the phone down, my fingers gripped onto the edge of the granite counter. Breaking the hard stone in two seemed an easier feat than coming face to face with the truth.

Our only lead was dead.

Killed.

Because we’d gotten close. Because we’d been pointed in his direction.

Planting the drugs in Dani’s apartment had been to tie up loose ends—to rope her into this crime and tie her up in it with a nice little bow.

Fearless racer found as drug fiend.

But now I saw the break-in for what it was: two-fold.

Because it had distracted us long enough for whoever was the mastermind behind this to get rid of the only man who could link Los Largartes to Dani’s shooting, and possibly the person responsible for it all.
